Does Charcoal Toothpaste Whiten Teeth? The Honest Answer
Charcoal does NOT bleach your teeth. This is the single most important sentence in this article and it needs to be understood precisely, because the confusion between two completely different processes is what keeps this category alive.
There are two ways a tooth becomes visually whiter. The first is bleaching ā a peroxide-based chemical reaction that penetrates the enamel and breaks apart the pigmented molecules held inside the tooth structure. This is not a matter of opinion, and it is not a marketing argument between competing products. Dental researchers have gone looking for the evidence base behind charcoal dentifrices and reported what they found. What they found was very little.
In 2017, Brooks, Bashirelahi and Reynolds published a literature review of charcoal and charcoal-based dentifrices in the Journal of the American Dental Association. Their conclusion was blunt: there was insufficient clinical and laboratory data to substantiate the cosmetic and health claims being made for these products, and clinicians should advise patients to be cautious when using charcoal and charcoal-based dentifrices.
In 2019, Greenwall, Greenwall-Cohen and Wilson published a review of charcoal-containing dentifrices in the British Dental Journal. It reached a similar destination: the claims made for these products were not adequately supported by evidence, and there were legitimate concerns about abrasivity, the frequent absence of fluoride, and the lack of data on long-term safety.
Two independent reviews, in two of the most widely read dental journals in the world, two years apart. Neither found the evidence. That is not a gap in the research. That is the answer.
The state of the evidence
The published dental literature does NOT support charcoal toothpaste as a whitening agent, a detoxifier, or an antibacterial. Reviews have explicitly cautioned against its use. When two independent reviews go looking for a benefit and come back with nothing, the honest reading is that the benefit is not there.
The āDetoxā Claim Has No Scientific Basis At All
Of all the claims made for charcoal toothpaste, this is the one that should end the conversation on its own. It is not weakly supported. It is not awaiting further study. It does NOT make sense.
Activated charcoal is a genuinely useful substance ā in the right setting.
